Vague Demands for "Owed Money"

I've received two odd phone calls in the past two weeks. Both demanded I pay over $1000 for an outstanding bill. They did not identify the company, they did not identify the company telling me I owed them money. They gave two options. Push one to pay the bill, push two to speak to a representative. I pushed two- and was immediately disconnected.

We ALWAYS pay our bills and I have an excellent credit score. Naturally, I assumed this was a hoax.

Today I received a letter from First Revenue Association saying I owe that money to AT & T. I'm now assuming those phone calls were from them. In the body of the letter it has huge spaces were my account number should be. It just says "Your ___________ AT & T account has been purchased by..."

I haven't had an AT & T account in 3 years. I've never received any letters from AT & T attempting to receive payment for this so-called debt. This letter is the first legit form of communication I've had about this in any way.

Naturally, I'm frustrated to be in collections about something I was never given an opportunity to pay (we've lived in the same place for 5 years.)

I'm also frustrated that these phone calls that I'm sure were logged as "contacts" were so poorly done. No information about anything. Just click here to pay us $1000 on your credit card.
