Beware of Geico's Underwriting Policies Regarding Teen with Learner's Permit ONLY!

I am so VERY ANGRY at Geico's auto insurance underwriting policies. When they found that I had a 16-year-old son with a Learner's's Permit---NOT EVEN A DRIVER'S LICENSE---they DOUBLED my insurance and wanted over $800.00 immediately. This made me look for an alternative coverage; I found one at half the price and bought it.

NOT ONE COMPANY WHO GAVE ME A QUOTE CHARGED ME FOR MY SON! I asked other parents if they had paid additional costs before their children got their permanent license. No one but I was charged for a non-licensed driver.

Just now, when I called Geico to cancel my coverage, I was told I owed them $89 for the time my son was on my policy! I AM disgusted! Is there another site where I can let parents know to keep their mouths shut and not volunteer the information to Geico that they have a teen with a learner's permit ONLY? I'm going to pay the swine so they can't trash my credit, but I am going to advise everyone, including my students' parents, not to purchase Geico auto insurance.

Geico is a very sad story, they rip a lot of ood people off and pay a lot of people who do not even deserve it.

They are a nightmare to deal with.

Ok Honest, I'll make a comment in defense of the liar - I also am an "Honest geico policy holder" and a loyal Christian. Although my post is several years after the original post, I'll make it anyhow for the sake of those who may read hereafter. I have had geico for about 10 years. Truth is, they were cheaper than several other companies I occasionally had received quotes from, but I am also a good driver, so I figured they recognized it more because of the length of time I insured with them. I have 2 sons, one 16, one 17. They live with my ex-wife. The 17 yr old has a license. I bought him a cheap used car worth $900 by NADA. I called geico to first put the car onto my policy. Then, I thought to do my ex-wife a favor and see if I could afford to put my son on my policy also, so I asked for a quote. Recap - A $900 car, absolute minimum liability, no frills, and he would use it only twice a week / 5 miles each way. They said my rate would close to double. You speak of honesty, but what about decency ? What about honor ? Where is the decency or honor in this ? It isn't just the kids they're hurting, it's the families, because ultimately, its mom and/or dad that's going to have to pick up the tab for this - and that was only one kid. I didn't tell them about the other. I'm not trying to justify lying, but when people are given no other choice, but to choose between food or a college savings, and paying auto insurance rates that are inflated simply because some politicians made auto insurance mandatory, and thus, they can get away with it - well something's got to give. And some people are just not strong enough for those virtues you speak of. You're right about honesty - but somehow, I just cant blame them for the lack of it here. It was said mandatory insurance would make it cheaper for everyone - but it was more like throwing the sheep to the wolves.

By the way, after I got the pricey quote, I said to them, "Well - hold off on it for now til I can figure out if I can afford to do this for my ex". They said, (ISMW) "Too late buddy - you already mentioned you had a kid of driving age in your household - we're going to put him on automatically". I said, "But he doesn't even live with me !!! "Sorry fella, that's our policy, either your ex-wife insure him, or you get the bill".

I thought we were supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but this is guilt by statistical analysis, until someone thinks you've grown out of the risk you represent, and its not fair to the families or the kids. If anyone cares, I ask you - Where is the grace, goodness, or Godly virtue in any of this ?

I read the post from "A" Honest Geico Customer in response to my posting stating that Geico charges for NON-DRIVING TEENS. I DID NOT tell anyone to lie. I simply told people not to volunteer the information that there was a teen WITHOUT A DRIVER'S LICENSE in the home. My son is NOT DRIVING! I resent being accused of dishonesty for advising people to beware of an underwriting policy that is going to penalize them for having a teen. If a teen is a non-driver a parent should not have to pay for insurance until the teen does drive.

Honesty is always the best policy. Parents please do not lie about your children as this post request. Protect your family. We know they deserve your love and falsifying your insurance policy isn't creating responsible young adults. I honestly hope, if this writer is a teacher, that the parents are aware of the writer's ethical stand on "keeping their mouths shut". Not telling all the truth is still not telling the truth.

Signed: A honest GEICO policy holder.
