priceline,comhtl emergengy cancel refused

I booked a hotel through priceline.com htl on july 262007 and canceled that day because of an emergency i also canceled on line as they had a cancel policy they are now saying you have to cancel the day before how do you know when an emergency will occur? please help as this is very disturbing I will never use priceline again do I need to seek legal counsel?
