Pets Health Plan Insurance

Pets Health Plan Insurance We purchased insurance for our dog from Pets Health Plan. It is provided by The Hartville Group. Our dog is a Black Lab. Shortly after we got the insurance she completely separated her ligament in her leg. She needed surgery. It was paid by the insurance company. A few months later the other leg started to do the same thing. We (the dr and I) tried to wait as long as we could before having to do the surgery. This problem started in March or April. Her ligament finally tore in August. Our insurance policy went from August 1 to July 31. We have had continueous coverage. We had the surgery in August. I submitted the bill. It was denied. Why. The problem started back in March or April. The surgery was done in another PLAN PERIOD. In other words, if you have a treatment for a problem on July 20 and your policy is renewed on Aug 1, and you need to have further treatment like surgery, it will not be covered. They do not carry over from one plan period and the finished product is done in another plan period. I just assumed that the insurance worked just like "human" insurance does. Nope, not with this company. My vet was very disappointed when I told him this and wrote a letter to them (the Pet Health Plan company). As of January 5, 2007, he had not heard anything from them. I then submitted a bill for pain meds that I had gotten for her a few months later after the surgery since she was still having problems with her leg. It was denied too. Why. I have to WAIT 180 days from the last treatment before they will pay anything associated with her leg. I looked into cancelling our policy. If I have submitted a claim in the current PLAN PERIOD, I cannot cancelled or they get to keep our money for the whole year. Do not go with this company. It has been awful and we have had to eat lots of money because of the way they run their coverage.
