My boyfriend and I, along with some friends had rented a boat from these people for the 4th of July Weekend in ’06. To summarize, they rented us a boat that wouldn’t work so they supposedly fixed it (took a few hours and we had to have it towed by friend’s rented jet ski – took a while) and then the same thing ended up happening again – the boat just wouldn’t start. So we then drove out to Trinity Alps which was pretty far from our campsite and told them to just pick up their broken boat. Then they came and dropped off a new boat and took their broken one back. The boats had to get “beached” because they never provided us with an anchor also. Then when we got home, a little while later, my boyfriend received his bank statement and there was a $500 charge for the gas tank for the broken boat. We called them about it and tried speaking with the owner and he never got back to us. They never sent us a bill or anything so we never knew about it until we saw it on the statement from the bank. So then we filed a complaint with the BBB and in their response they claimed that WE BROKE THEIR BOAT. They say there was a leak in their gas tank, which is probably why it wouldn’t start as soon as we got to our campsite, because it kept running out of gas. But we didn’t do anything to their boat or any part of it. We just took it to our campsite and it wouldn’t start. When the mechanic was “fixing the boat”, we saw him place a piece of steel wool in the tank and thought that was kind of funny. Anyhow, we didn’t feel that we should be blamed or have to pay for their broken boat, which apparently leaked a couple of tanks of gas into Trinity Lake. I had received notice back from the BBB late so our complaint with them had lapsed. We are not so concerned with the money, we just want people to be informed of their shady practices. No one we know will ever do any business with them again and we are actually considering buying our own boat just so we don’t ever have to encounter the same issue.
