Gift certificate

I received a gift certificate at Christmas from my son that I want to activate but am not able to do so because I am asked to enter a credit card number. I do not own a credit card and therefore I'm not able to activate the gift certificate. Why wasn't this information made available at the time of purchase? The gift certificate would cease to be effective after the year of activation, why should lack of a credit card invalidate a gift certificate? A gift is a gift with no requirements.

I know of no other gift certificate that has this type of requirement.
