I went into to Togo's at the above location on the afternoon of August 2, 2007. I ordered a combo which includes the sandwich, chips and a soda, I also ordered a bottle water and bottle ice tea, after paying I picked up the bottle water and ask the young lady if I could have my cup so that I could get some ice because the bottle water was not very cold. At this time another lady walked in and asked the young lady if I had already paid, the young lady response was yes. The other lady start to ring up the cup and at that time I ask why am I being charge for the cup when it should come with the combo. I told the lady that I wanted the cup for some ice because the water was not cold, she picked up the my bottle water and said "this water is cold", my response to her was that the water was not cold enough for me and I would appreciate if I could have the cup that comes with my combo so I could get a cup of ice, she again picked up the bottle water and said "this water is cold", at this point I'm standing there thinking this is unbelievable, what may be cold to her may not be cold to me and since it's for me I should be able to drink the water at whatever temp is satisfactory to me. The lady walks over to the counter points her finger at me and said, "that's why you people don't have businesses now", I'm standing there thinking this cannot be true what I'm hearing. I ask the lady "do you mean me as a individual or do you mean the African American community", I am African American and the lady looked East Indian. At this point I told her I thought her statement was a very racial statement and I was not sure what that had to do with a cup that I had paid for. Her response was "I am a racist so what" I replied the problem is you are a minority just like I am, that's the problem.
I ask the young lady that was helping me for the manager, she pointed at the lady I than ask for someone over her, she pointed at the lady and said she is the owner, I was in TOTAL SHOCK. I ask for her name and said I was going to report her to the corporate office, she looked at me and said "I don't give a SHI__, you can do whatever you want I have my people here to say what happened". I ask her for my money back for everything so I could leave her store, she gave me the money back and handed me her card, her name is Rita Narayan, Owner.
I called the Togo's corporate office and spoke with a representative by the name of Kim. I was offered a gift certificate for Togo's I told Kim that Togo's is not an establishment that I frequented and she could keep the gift certificate for someone else. Kim took my name, address and phone number and said someone would be getting back to me, I ask Kim for the person name that would be calling and was told she could not give that information out, I told her I would like to know who would be calling so when they called my office I would expect their call, she said it was against the policy because if they gave the name out then we as customer would be calling the person, again I'm SHOCKED, how can I call the person when I didn't ask for a direct number for the person, just the name, needless to say I have not received a call back.
I have been in business in the Sacramento area for myself since 1990 and have been very successful, I have been featured in the Sacramento Magazine twice, it's shocking that in today's time we still have people that will form their opinion on STUPIDITY. I will pass this story to as many people as I can and have decided not to patronize any Togo's or any businesses in the Elk Grove area.
