Fitness One / gym

Fitness One / gym Fitness One - Ontario Location I was a member of Fitness One in an Ontario location. I joined for a 1 year membership specifically a one year membership. In March I was moving to another province where there are no Fitness One locations. I went into the gym and tried to cancel my membership, I was told I was not able to cancel because of the "great deal" I got on my membership. I left it at that thinking I only had a couple months until my year was up and would deal with the payments. What I didn't know is now 4 months after my year was up Fitness One was still taking payments out of my account! I called the head office and explained I had tried to cancel but was not allowed to, they told me even though I had joined for 1 year I had to stop payments myself after one year or they continue to take payments out, even though I had gone in and tried to cancel. What is the point of a "1 year membership" if they keep taking money out after one year? The company was completely unsympathetic to my situation and would not reimburse my money. Fitness One has completely dirty and underhanded business practices beware. Wouldn't it be good business practice to call a client and let them know their membership is up for one year and ask if they want to renew? No of course not because they figure you will forget and they and continue to siphon money off you for a service you are not even using... how very dirty and underhanded. Imagine all the people who are they are ripping off who haven't even noticed the money is still coming out of their accounts. Criminals that hide behind fine print as far as I am concerned. =20 From: Message Author (click here to email author)Date: Friday, 10-Aug-07 12:52:38 CDT Business: Reply Online Consumer: Comment On This Comment On ThisThis is exactly my situation. I was willing to pay for the year that I signed up for, but now Fitness One is telling me that my account is still open. Conveniently, they sent me an overdue notice SIX MONTHS AFTER my payments stopped going through! To top it all off, they won't let me cancel my membership until I pay these outrageous fees for a service I have not used. What are they, the mob? I feel like this should be illegal, extortion perhaps? I did go to the gym to cancel the membership, but the monthly fee was still being charged. The situation got worse when I called their "head office" which in fact is only a financial credit company Fitness One worked with. Not only did they refuse to refund all the fees they took out from my account, they CONTINUED to take money from my account after speaking with them on the phone. I had to call them again to ask about the fee they continued to take out of my account. They confirmed that they would do it, but still refuse to refund any of the money. I soon realized that I was not even speaking with the person in Fitness One. Both the gym and the credit company refuse to give me the contact number of their actual head office. What kind of service is this when the consumer has to call or inform them about the cancellation several times and, meanwhile still being charged with the fees. This past weekend the AC was not working in 30 degree humidity outside and when we went to ask at the desk the girls behind the desk said that they do not have the key for the AC, only the manager, who wasn't working that weekend and that they were told to not open the AC because it is too expensive. I just emailed the owner of Femme Fitness requesting to either cancel my membership or give me the rest of my membership free, he refused. Better Business Bureau it is.
