I kept receiving invoices from Consumer Reports magazine, despite having paid to renew my subscription. I paid the $26 renewal charge in November, 2006 and the check cleared my bank. I called Consumer Reports customer service, and they said they had no record of any payment since 2004. That made no sense, as I had paid a renewal fee in November of 2005 and had been receiving magazines regularly. Anyway, when I told them the 2006 payment had cleared, they said I had to send them a copy of the front and back of the check. As canceled checks are no longer provided by banks, that means a copy has to be requested and paid for. I told the customer service person that I didn't think I should have to pay for their mistake, and she said I could call their customer relations department (not a toll free number). I haven't called them yet, as I am too angry. Isn't it ironic that a supposedly consumer friendly organization is ripping off their own subscribers? Now I can let them have my payment, or pay to either get the subscription back or get them to cancel my subscription and refund my money.
