Perfect Pets Pet Store in Mesquite, TX

Perfect Pets (972-285-7878) at 1601 South Peachtree Road in Mesquite , TX 75180-1107 completely screwed me. After researching and deciding I’d love to invest the money in a purebred toy dog, I found Perfect Pets on worldpages.com. I live in Plano so to drive to Mesquite was quite a ways, but for a puppy, why not? I decided with my husband to buy a Yorkie for $700 and we called her.

An older lady answered the phone and said that she had Yorkies but they would not be ready to take home for a month so to call back then. I set a reminder on my calendar and waited a month.

When the month rolled around, I called her again. She remembered me and said her shop was only open on Saturdays from like noon to 4 PM. So we jumped in the car and drove over to her shop as soon as she was open.

We pulled into a scary part of town, following her directions. There was a small, beat down strip of businesses so we pulled into the parking lot and saw the cardboard sign. The parking lot was full of holes and trash and the front of the store looked abandoned and dirty, but we decided to check it out. Besides, we had driven all that way. Hardly any cars were in the parking lot but an old Ford Expedition. It was backed up to the front of the store with the trunk open.

The wheels were missing rims and it was covered in mud. This was not our scene but we dealt with it and went into the small shop. We were hit with a wall of urine and feces stench that nearly knocked my husband and me both over. Oddly enough, the store was jam packed with people to the point where you could hardly walk. The empty parking lot wouldn’t have given that impression, but we both kept thinking all was OK.

We squeezed through the 30 people in this 20 foot by 10 foot room and looked at the hundreds of toy dogs crammed in with one another through the cage walls. I saw the Yorkies but this mini Pomeranian caught my attention immediately. I went to her and looked around to see if she could be pulled out so I could play with her. A bearded beast of a woman came up and we were told she was as big as she’d get at a mere 2 pounds. She’d had all shots except one and was perfect for breeding. She didn’t eat dog food, just chicken and gravy. She was potty trained and very sweet. And she was only 5 months old.

The cost? $500. Feeling horrible she lived somewhere with a leaky roof and dirt caked in everywhere, I begged my husband to buy her. He busted out with a debit card but the lady said she needed $500 cash. He rolled his eyes and went to a gas station ATM up the road while I waited there with her. I didn’t want to be left alone in such a dump but there were so many people, I was afraid she’d get picked up by someone else.

She seemed to be happy and clung right to me ready to go home the entire time. While my husband was gone getting the money, the lady decided to give the dog her last shot and showed me the dog’s “documents”. Seemed legit. She went over the dog’s feeding rituals with me and explained all toy dogs eat nothing but chicken, gravy, and sometimes stew.

Mind you, I am sitting on those 99 cent plastic chairs from a Dollar store and her desk is covered in crap. I had to sweep out the chair from getting dirt on me before I sat down. She had syringes laid out and empty human food cartons from McDonald’s and Burger King everywhere. It was nauseating. I was feeling so sorry for these dogs.

My husband showed back up and paid her. He signed all the documents and agreed to her “No Returns” policy. We brought her home and she seemed happy. She had constant diarrhea and sometimes wouldn’t move for hours. She wasn’t hyper at all and seemed out of it a lot of the time. She wasn’t potty trained like the lady told us and her papers turned out not to be legit.

They were an “online” paper you get, not the champion bloodline issued through the AKC like the lady promised. But that was OK, we thought. We love her now so her “pedigree” isn’t the important thing. Well her diarrhea got ridiculous to the point where she had to be caged up constantly and her quality of life was gone. We had only had her 6 days when we decided to take a loss on the dog and gave her to my mom, Goddess of all that is Fixing a Dog.

She took the dog to the vet and found out she had a 6th toe, was not breeding material, and was ate up with worms. And not just typical worms. Contagious to humans worms found in birds. It was bacteria that breeds in water. The vet said the dog had been living in a few inches of old water that was stagnant and rank. (Not so much her words). She also has 2 rows of teeth like a shark.

$1500 later (not counting the $500 spent to buy the sickly little thing), Prissy is happy and living with my mom. She lives in the lap of luxury. This dog luckily enough ended up in a home that could financially afford to get her into a healthy state. Other dogs that puppy factory is breeding were probably not as lucky. It breaks my heart to think about what this trashy lady is doing.

Its not about the money or the vet bills. Its about human decency. She obviously hardly cares for these animals. Her “full grown” 2 pounds turned into 6 pounds after my mom got her well. It took 3 months just to get rid of the worms and we’re afraid Prissy won’t live a long life because of the difficult first year she experienced. People like this should be arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Consumer Follow-up

Since this was posted, in December of 2006, Prissy fell violently ill from acute kidney failure. Because of her puppy mill genetics, her kidneys were not worth much. She threw up constantly and refused to eat for weeks. My parents spent $1500 in vet bills once they had to have her admitted into an animal hospital. We all visited her every day and refused to give up on her.

The vets started thinking it may be time to put her down to preserve her quality of life, but Prissy had this twinkle in her eye like she wanted to live. She had an IV, a cone around her head, and constant medication being pumped in and out of her. But she still looked happy anytime my mom would come around.

My husband and I went to the state of Texas, calling in complaints on the witch (Perfect Pets in Mesquite, TX) who allows her puppy mill inbreeding to take place. We found out she didn’t have a Federal Tax ID and she has operated under various business names. We thought we’d never be able to have this woman pay for the damage she caused. Our next move is to post up in front of her store with posters calling her out for being a puppy mill and running off any customers who may unknowingly get involved with her.

My mom couldn’t stop crying over her poor baby being in the hospital. We bought Prissy a mink coat for Christmas to keep her warm and had a lot of photos of Prissy framed for my mom…in case the inevitable happened.

Then one day, Prissy’s numbers started leveling out. She had lost 3 pounds (a lot for a 6 pound dog), but was alive and recovering. Now she lives her life in a bubble. She can’t go outside or get groomed. We are very careful with germs. She can only eat special food for non-functioning kidneys and the vets prepared us the time would come again when Prissy would fall ill. And maybe next time, she wouldn’t make it.

They give her a 5 year life expectancy, which breaks my families’ heart just to think about it. The people at Perfect Pets in Mesquite, TX are horrendous people with no hearts and deserve to spend time behind bars because this is a crime against animals, not just a complaint on a business. Please, let me help you. Do NOT use this company. Do NOT use their pet store. Go to a reputable breeder and save yourself the heartache.

I bought a Chihuahua from this lady at this very same facility in 2008. The facility was as described per your first complaint. My little puppy was so sick to the point that she had blood in her stool. Luckily, I had her on a Banfield vet plan at PetSmart and they were able to cater to her health. She is a very active loving beautiful white Chihuahua. After reading some of these things that I have seen on the net about this place, I am so glad that God sent me to this place to rescue my dog Charley because there is no telling what would have happened to her. I can remember her being very distant and kind of mean when I first got her home, but her personality is now very different. In fact, she is not your typically ankle biting Chihuahua which is another reason I am thankful. I am glad they shut her mil down. I hope she is not still running a business. If you want to call it that.

In the morning hours of Aug. 11, 2009, Kaufman County Sheriff’s deputies and investigators busted an alleged puppy mill. The deputies converged on the property located between Mabank and Prairieville, assisted by Human Society officers.

The Cedar Creek Lake Humane Society was tipped off to the possible puppy mill when someone at the kennel called them to ask for dog food donations. The suspects told them they had 400 dogs to feed, which led to an investigation. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office obtained and executed a search warrant on the kennel property and located 500-600 small dogs and puppies.

The Sheriff’s Department said that the dogs are all small lap dogs such as Terriers, Poodles and Chihuahuas. Many of the dogs were found to be sick or dying. They described the scene as poor living conditions for the dogs and said many were malnourished.

An emergency shelter has been set up for the dogs.

No charges have been filed against the kennel owners at this time, but the crime is still an ongoing investigation by the Kaufman Sheriff’s Office. If convicted of running a puppy mill, it is a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $4,000 fine and one year in jail.

The Kaufman County kennel owner is denying that she was running a puppy mill. 72 year old Margaret Boyd owns the property that the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office raided on Aug. 11, 2009. She also owns Peggy’s Perfect Pets in Mesquite, Texas.

Boyd says that she was only trying to love and care for the 550 dogs and 15 cats that were removed from her property near Prairieville, Texas. She also says that she did not mistreat the animals and intends on trying to get them all back.

The Kaufman County Sheriff and the Human Society disagree with Boyd’s claims that the animals were not mistreated. On the day the animals were rescued and removed from Boyd’s property, 3 of the dogs died from disease and malnutrition. Many of the dogs have skin conditions and other issues. The Sheriff’s Office says that most of the dogs were not fed enough and were living in their own waste. Some of these dogs are pregnant and have already begun having their puppies.

The Human Society is providing food and health care for the animals. They have begun cleaning them up and are hoping to eventually find them all good homes. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office said that they are still investigating the alleged puppy mill. They said they do expect to file animal cruelty charges against Margaret Boyd.

WE ARE PROVIDING INFORMATION TO HELP THE AUTHORITIES PUT THIS MONSTER BEHIND BBARS!!! IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION OR FELL VICTIM TO HER, PLEASE NOTIFY THE AUTHORITIES IN KAUFMAN COUNTY.
