Star Choice Canada In the fall of 2005, I bought a Star Choice satellite from a local distributor who installed it and signed me up with Star Choice. The distributor was aware that I was selling my home and moving out of the country in the spring and I only wanted the system for the winter.
When I went to disconnect the service in the spring, I was told I would have to pay a 200.00 disconnection fee.
I was never made aware of this when I bought the system and they admitted that they do not let the customer know beforehand, but it is stated in the fine print on the back of the bill, after the fact.
There policy is wrong and sleazy business practice. I am reporting them to the CRTC, Comsumers B.C. and our local MP, and I refuse to pay the 200.00

My elderly mother got talked into buying her satellite receiver & dish. Later she went to daughters for a year. She had been told that if she uses their vacation feature it will cost her $200 for disconnect and another $200 to reconnect so she just kept paying the $51/month. A year later she returned home facing a pension reduction so she needed to cancel. She asked for the cancel before the next billing cycle but was told the cancel won't take place until after the next billing cycle. The most they would do for her is to reduce her plan to the basic level until the cancel goes through. The company must be made get with the 21st century!. 1) They advance bill for their packages. 2) They want an extra month (30days notice) to cancel. 3) They don't respect seniors on fixed income. 4) They reserve the right to modify programming and charges without notice and also reserve the right to shut off your service immediately for any reason. Local Stations and the CRTC need to hear about this!
