Credit cards. I lost my husband in 2003 and due to high medical expenses and loss of income after his death there were balances on credit cards. The companies were contacted and agreed to accept a less amount on the balances which was still in the thousands of dollars. With the help of my family rather than filing bankruptcy we paid the agreed amount. FINE. Now at the end of 2005 I get a 1099 from each of the companies which means that shows as income to me at he end of the year. I do not remember them saying anything about 1099's.

I was later told by an attorney I should have just filed bankruptcy as this action shows against my credit anyway as a negative.

Beware of trying to be honest and pay your debit.
