Subject: Sterns & Foster

We also purchased a Sterns & Foster top-end mattress for my bad back. One thousand-three hundred dollars ($1300.00) for a supposed "top-end" mattress from "The Mattress Store" on Hall Rd. in Macomb, Michigan.

Within 2 months, the foam pillow top lost it's firmness and became very, very soft. Everytime I got into bed I felt like I was sleeping in a rut. Which is exactly the reason we replaced the previous mattress that we had for 11 years.

I contacted Sterns & Foster Company with a detailed letter explaining the problem and making sure to tell them that the mattress was only a few months old. They did not have a customer care complaint department and directed me to the purchasing store.

I contacted the store, I explained the problem in detail. The owner came out with a "pole". He layed the pole across the top of the mattress to measure the "sagging". He said the only way it would be replaced under the warranty would be if the "sagging" was 1 &1/2 inches or more. I again explained that the problem wasn't "sagging", but the foam pillowtop had lost it's denseness and had become very soft in the "sleeping area". I told him to lay in the sleeping area in question, which he did not.

He proceeded to tell me that it didn't seem to have any problem with "sagging" and that the problem I was experiencing was normal break-in. That every bed had a break-in and itw ould be fine. Basically, he didn't hear a word I said. After 30 minutes of trying to get him to lay on the bed to "experience" my complaint, he left with giving me no satisfaction what-so-ever.

Six months later, I again contacted Sterns & Foster to complain that the problem had become worse. They said there was "nothing they could do and to contact the store". I called the store to express my complaint again and was told that if it wasn't sagging more than 1 & 1/2 inches, there was no problem that would fall under the warranty.

Here it is 1 & 1/2 years later and it is worse than ever. Both side of the mattress pillow-top have lost whatever firmness that it had. Both of us are sleeping in a trench. We have rotated the mattress every 2 months. I weigh 170 lbs., my wife weighs 110 lbs. This is what it it takes to "break-in" the mattress within 2 months.

Sterns & Foster IS NOT a reputable company. The Company does not and cannot handle customer complaints. They have the selling store handling all complaints. Sterns & Foster says that all their distributors are trained in handling warranty issues.

Never again will I purchase a Sterns & Foster product. This also includes Sealy products, which it seems to own or is the parent company.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING ANY MODEL OF STERNS & FOSTER OR SEALY PRODUCTS.

YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED IN IT'S PERFORMANCE AND WARRANTY.
