Business: Dr. Jeffrey Marmor (Dentist)

Complaint: My name is Gary St.Onge. I have a complaint about a dentist that involves both the quality of work as well as the fees charged. The work was done on my son, Daniel St.Onge. I spoke to someone in the Port Chester office and they felt that this issue was worthy of submission. The dentist is Dr. Jeffrey Marmor who works out of an office at 200 Westage Business Center in Fishkill, NY.
The history is as follows. While my son was undergoing orthodontic treatment a few years ago, he was hit in the mouth during a sporting event. As a result, one of his two front teeth "died" and required a root canal which left the tooth discolored. Once the orthodontic treatment was completed, it was recommended by the orthodontist that we go to Dr. Marmor (another dentist in the group) for a cosmetic procedure on the discolored tooth. Dr. Marmor's first approach was to cement a porcelain laminate veneer onto the tooth. The charge for this was $600 which was not covered by insurance since our plan at the time did not cover cosmetic procedures. This was done on 7/1/99. While the outcome looked okay, it did not last. Over the next 4 years, the veneer chipped twice and we went back to Dr. Marmor. Each time he did some repairs with cement, but they did not last. The second time, Dr. Marmor had indicated that if it happened again, he'd go to a crown. Within a year, it happened again and he then proceeded to go to a crown. This was done on 7/31/03 and the charge was $675, of which $438.75 was covered by insurance. Within 2 and a half years, this crown also chipped. As was the case in the previous cases, there was no "trauma" associated with the chipping. It chipped in normal use and my son does not even know when it occurred which calls into question the quality of the work. In November of 2005, we went back to Dr. Marmor again. Since my son is in college, we scheduled to replace the previous crown during the holiday break due to the leadtime in getting a new crown. When we went in for the first appointment on 12/22/05, we were told the charge was $975 (which is well above other dentists in the area). However, the office told us that the insurance would cover half and that they would talk to the doctor about a discount for our portion since this had broken in only about 2 years. We paid $243.75 at that time. We went back for the final placement of the new crown on 1/5/06. After the procedure, we were told by Dr. Marmor's office that they had checked with the insurance company and that they would not cover any portion of the new crown since it had been less than 5 years and we were now responsible for the entire $975! They also mentioned nothing about a discount due to the short life span of Dr. Mamor's work. After some "discussion" with the dentist whereby he insisted my son (and not his work) was the problem, he reduced the bill by $150 to $825. I paid the balance on the bill since I did not want to get myself into an ongoing credit dispute involving collection agencies, etc. However, I am extremely dissatisfied and feel the quality of the work is the real issue and Dr. Marmor will not step up to the problems with the quality of his work. His charges are also outrageous. I would have accepted a $200 - $300 charge under the circumstances, but $825 out of my pocket for a recurring problem with no insurance coverage is unacceptable.
I would like to lodge a formal complaint regarding Dr. Marmor over this incident. Please let me know what steps I need to take for this process to move forward. At the very least, I want there to be a public record of this dentist's practices so that other consumers can be forewarned.
