my phone service was closed and my number was stolen from me- please help

my name ia andrea sulkis- i have had the phone number 718-645-6503 for the last 10 years.

My service is with Vartec. A company which rents their lines from Verizon.

On January 10, 2006, my service went dead. Without any help from Vartec- as they told me that i no longer was their customer, I had to find out why my service went dead.

I found out that a complete stranger opened an account with Vonage with my phone number.How this could have happened is beyond me. Vartec is not helping me to establish my phone number or service back and Vonage is not releasing the number that they have aquired without my knowledge either. I pay my bills on time and never closed my account with Vartec. I was never notified that my phone number would be switched to Vonage. Vartec is telling me that i requested this change. This is ludacrist. I can't understand how this happened. Someone stole my number and opened an account with it. Please help me. I have no service and depend on MY number for personal and business matters. If this is not identity theft, I don't know what is!
