2005 Dodge Durango

I just bought a 2005 Dodge durango and found that the cruise control does not work going down hill. The vehicle has picked up as much as 17 mph over what the cruise was set on.I have never had any vehicle of any make do that and I am being told by chrysler that it was designed that way and that there is no fix for it or that there will be a fix. Apparently it is going to take a death for chrysler to get off the dime to fix this problem.

Any help or ideas would be welcome.
