American Home Shield scam

American Home Shield scam I've just learnt several scam tricks from AHS in Hawaii the hard way! My cooktop/hood (old GE SensiTemp model) lost temperature control and would not turn on back in June 2005. AHS sent a techinician to repair, and declared it's the temp-sensor. After waiting 1 week for the part, the technician tried again to no avail and declared the control unit needs to be repaired and it will take 2 weeks to get spare parts. As I had to leave Hawaii and travel back to mainland, I just waited for AHS's call back. AHS never called back on back-order status. Four months later, I called AHS again, and they declared the "back-order part" was no longer available and the "control unit" needed to be removed and sent back for repair, and it will take 4 to 6 weeks to process. Then they tried really hard to convince me that AHS can pay me off just $200 (actually $150 after my $50 co-payment) because the unit is "repairable" if I chose not to repair it. I checked the replacement costs and it would be >$1500 for similar features and functions of my existing unit. So I decided to let AHS try again, and after 6 weeks' waiting, the technician brought back the same old part (neither of us can detect any traces of repair) and installed it to no effect! The technician now declared the unit "non-repairable" and AHS went into another long delay to "research my unit". AHS finally got back to me offering the cheapest model available for replacement, ignoring any and all of the features/functions of my existing unit. AHS's argument (I talked to several departments at AHS for weeks to no avail) is simply that "as my existing unit is no longer available, AHS can determin in its sole discretion what replacement unit to offer". What're the lessons: 1) AHS only interested in ripping-off customers and did not care about inconveniences to customer from the lengthened delay. 2) In fact, the lengthened delay is just a tactic to get the customer to go away with minimum payout ($150) and evading AHS's obligation. Even to lie about "repairability" in my unfortunate case. 3) if that didn't work, AHS will "in its sole discretion" only offer cheapest models and blatantly evading its marketing promotion of "replacement with same features and functions" using the loophole that the same exact old unit is no longer available (that just cover about 90% of the cases). Beware of AHS, consumers. _____ Brings words and photos together (easily) with PhotoMail - it's free and works with Yahoo! Mail.
