RE: AOL

RE: AOL

Below is the text of a message I sent to AOL regarding their failure to remove me from their subscriber list as requested, offer to return a small portion of the nearly $300 they collected in fees, then notification that I would, in fact, be charged yet an additional month's usage even though I never used their services during the entire course of this matter

Mr. Falconer,

What the hell does it take to get rid of AOL? I called October 10, 2005 to request that my service be dropped. I did not like the service I was getting, and had changed to one that was included in my TV package. I neither liked nor needed AOL.

A very nice young man handled my call. He was very gracious and said I could get another three months of AOL service free. I told him I would not be using the service but agreed to let it continue on a free basis. I presumed that at the end of the three months the service would be dropped. I never used it.

The past year has been a difficult one as I have gone through an extended divorce proceeding, changed jobs, and moved twice. Not that those things are of any concern to you, but my distraction with these items contributed to my not seeing, until last month (July, 2006), that your fees were being automatically deducted from my checking account. Also, I noticed that in April, the monthly charge was increased from $23.90 to $25.90. I should have been notified of the change and given the opportunity to respond.

I immediately called (cancellation confirmation number 1062130020) and requested not only a discontinuation of the charges, but, also, reimbursement for payment you collected for a service I never, not once, used; $227.77. I was told that that would not be possible, but that I “would be reimbursed for the past two months.” I was pissed but felt I could let it drop at that point.

Then, yesterday, I received your foolish, goddamned letter telling me that I would be charged another month’s fee because I had missed your billing date, it said nothing about the 2-month reimbursement (which I calculate at $61.70), and then you had the audacity to continue trying to market your worthless services to me including the one to keep my buddy list, “…No Catch! No Gimmick!”

I want all charges to my bank account from April 20 onward reimbursed immediately. That’s the date you changed the rates without my approval. Your records, if you keep them, will show that I have never used AOL services. After that I want all further contact with your company discontinued. A copy of this letter as well as your response will be sent to Bank of America, the Washington Better Business Bureau, and any other agency that may serve to warn customers of your business practices.

Regards,
