Charter One "Totally Free Checking"

Charter One Bank

On July 28th, 2006, I was at the gas station prepaying for gas, mostly cash, but asked the cashier to put $1.00 on my Charter One Debit Card. When she punched in the amount, she mispunched, and put in $1.91. (I have no clue how, but...) So at that point I knew my checking account was overdrawn by $0.49. On July 29th, I called that bank and checked my balance, they said it was -$0.49. I said fine, and made a $25.00 deposit. A week later, after I made purchases off the $24.51 left over from my deposit, I find out that they charged me $35.00 for being $0.49 overdrawn! This resulted in $219.00 in overdraft fees when the other purchases came through. I can't believe this! I still had two checks out when I found out about this, so I didn't make a deposit until I was able to talk to them. They said they wouldn't do anything about their $35.00 fee throwing my checking account out of whack.

The real sad part is, I've been a fantastic charter one customer for more than 2 years. I've even recommended them to other people. But seeing that my dedication to them is repaid like this. I will let everyone I know how wrong I was about Charter One. I mean how are they going to charge me over $200.00 for being $.049 overdrawn?
