I signed up for an automatic flight insurance program that kicks in every
time I buy an airplane ticket with my MasterCard. My credit card is billed
for $13.00 for a $1,000,000 dollar policy. I recently changed a flight and
was billed $100 for this change, Steep, but fair as I was informed in
advance by United as to what the change would cost. What was not anticipated
was the charge by Citicard for $13.00 for flight insurance. Apparently Citi
automatically charges for flight insurance for any airline charge over
$50.00, even if it is not for a flight. There is a footnote on the bill
informing the card holder that he can call or a refund of inappropriate
insurance charges and list a number, 800 950 5114. Unfortunately, nobody at
that number knows anything about such charges. Neither does Citicard's
customer service at 888 766 CITI. After four calls I was finally told to
call 800 237 4365 where the bill was rectified. It took me a half-hour to
achieve this correction. I wonder how many customers fail to notice the
inappropriate charge and how many give-up after calling the wrong number
that is given on the bill.
I also wonder how many airline tickets are less than $50.00 and why Citibank
doesn't rewrite their program to apply to tickets only or at least raise the
cut-off price to a more reasonable amount. I also wonder how many policies
Citicard has sold and how much money it has collected for non-existent
flights.
