credit I want all of you single income families out there ti hear this so you can be protected from this too. My husband and I went to purchase a vehicle at a dealership in Utah. I am a stay-at-home mom but I have a great credit rating. My husbands credit wasn't as good at the time but he, of course, made all of the income. The dealer informed us after looking at both credit profiles that it would be beneficial for us to use my credit score and his income for the purchase. Wait a minute, is this legal? According to the dealer, we lived in a community property state and it was. According to the courts, it wasn't. Not long after purchasing the vehicle, we took a huge paycut and were forced to file BK. At the hearing, the lawyer for the financial institution presented us with some false documents that were given to them as part of the finance paperwork. They decided to sue us as a result of those. In court, they could not prove who made the false docs. Nor could they prove we actually DID anything wrong. However, because I was honest and told them I knew they were using my husbands income and my credit, they stuck us with a lofty $20,000 judgement. all this for a vehicle that originally cost $14,000. Let our bad experience be a lesson. Don't believe what you are told even if you are talking to a proposed "expert" in the field. Always know the laws.
