Drive (Progressive) Insurance

2005

In December of 2004 while living in Portland, OR I became a customer of DRIVE insurance. I have been told that DRIVE insurance only offers 6-month policies. I will be the first to admit that I have made some late payments. Twice I have gotten the payment in just under cancellation. I have called once a month since December 2004 to make sure that payments need to be POSTMARKED by the due date and NOT RECEIVED BY THE DUE DATE. At the time of my incident I had called to verify this information 7 times. At the end of May 2005 I received notice of pending renewal and sent in the required amount of $247.50. At the beginning of June I received a statement of renewal, they had accepted my check and there would be no lapse in coverage. Two days later I received a cancellation notice from DRIVE stating they had not received my check for 247.50. Not only did they receive it well before the due date but they cashed it. I immediately called the customer service line only to be told that my $247.50 had been used towards my LAST policy from December 2004 to June 2005. I argued that I did not owe any money on the last policy. (I mean why would they offer to renew if I still owed?) The customer service rep then apologized and said it was an error or their part. I was relieved but when I asked her what their course of action was for this (would my policy start immediately or retro-actively) I was told that they would just bill me for June and July…IN JULY. I tried to explain again that I did not owe any money for JUNE. At this point I threw the phone against the wall. My husband told them we had to go and would call back.

After looking at all the options and trying to decide if we should go without insurance (illegal in most states) we decided just to pay what they THOUGHT we owed.

It was never resolved. Unfortunately many policies require you to pay money up front and living in the unemployment capital of the United States (well it seems like it) we didn’t have to money for that. I wish they would have correctly billed us. I wish they would have admitted their mistake.

I am still with this insurance company because they are the cheapest (and now I see why).
