Bell mobility contract

Bell mobility contract

Oh boy, where to start?

About a year ago, I lost my cel phone. Of course, this was reported to Bell Mob and the local police. The BM rep kindly offered to replace and upgrade my phone for $25. I should note here that this account had been active for nearly a decade, and at the time, was my only telephone service. A brief mention was made of a contract period during this conversation...I can't recall if the duration was mentioned, but I do know that I don't commit myself to long term obligations of more that a year.

In late April 2005, a micro pin inside the phone's recharge receptacle proved faulty. After several trips between the two outlets in town and the unwillingnes to provide a replacetn of the same make and model, I requested a termination of service.

Initially i was led to understand that the contract was non voidable until the outstanding balance was paid. Then I was told that it couldn't be cancelled by the customer. At this point I ceased responding (ie: paying) the bill as I was not receiving service and felt the warranty was not being properly honoured. Since then, I have been requested to pay the remainder of the year to end any obligations. Although heavy handed given the age of my account, I've made willing payments as finances allowed. Bell, for their part, has happily continued to accumulate charges and interest withthe occasional motivation of being sent to collections.

11/12/05 brought a message on my land line to please contact BM as it had been a month since my last payment. Today (16/12/05) I contacted them to arrange payment of the remaining $130 owing and was informed that the contract is for two years and that it will cost me an additional $200 to get out of.

In short, I feel that the conditions are changed selectively to continue my obligation and to not offer cost efective alternatives to end this situation. To date, I have already paid nearly $300 for services I couldn't use and frankly, cannot afford.
